Compassionate face Towers - Bayon. Dedicated to Lord Shiv and Lord Buddh, it was bulit by King Jayavarman VII in the end of the 12th century. It has 54 face towers and bas relief galleries. Situated at the centre of Angkor Thom, Bayon was the state temple of Jayavarman VII. Its structure and architecture are relatively complex. It is famous for its face towers which were originally supposed to be 54 or 49 but now only 34 are remaing at the site. Most of these temple towers have faces carved on their four sides but there are some which have faces only on their one or two sides. The outer enlosure of the temple measures 156 m x 141 m. The inner closure is 80 m x 70 m. The main structure of the temple has galleries, corner pavilions and gopuras. The Bayon by its structure seems to have been used for the Hindu and Buddhist worship. The iconography belongs to both the religions. (Image # 00249).
